Auxetics are materials that have a negative Poisson’s Ratio. When stretched, they become thicker in the two directions perpendicular to the applied tension, and when compressed, they become thinner in the two directions perpendicular to the applied compression. Compared to conventional materials, auxetic materials have much higher energy absorption, fracture resistance, shear resistance, impact resistance, buoyancy, acoustic dampening, vibration dampening and thermal insulation.
